CBA president
Aelred Cody called the annual business meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.
Richard J. Sklba gave the report of the chair of the Board of Trustees
on the healthy financial situation of the association. Lawrence E. Boadt, C.S.P., treasurer of the
association, then presented the treasurer’s report, the substance of which had
been previously distributed to the members present.
Joseph Jensen,
O.S.B., gave the report of the executive secretary. The Executive Board
authorized funding for continuing the CBA Scholarships, twelve Memorial
Stipends, two CBA Fellowships, three Archaeological Research Stipends, Visiting
Professorships to the Pontifical Biblical Institute and the Ecole Biblique, and
CBA Travel Grants. In addition, the
board approved the following grants: $18,000 for the dig at Tell Mozan/Urkesh;
$22,000 for the archaeological project at Tell Qarqur; $2,500; for the Japanese
translation project of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum; $10,000 to the Ecole
Biblique in Jerusalem toward the renovation of the library; $5,000 to the Dead Sea Scrolls
Foundation. The board also voted to
continue to provide subscriptions to the Religious
Studies Review for members of the association. For the past many years the
board has voted a tithe of membership dues for famine relief, which this year
would have come to $5,274; however, in view of the current severe situation,
the board voted to increase that amount almost five-fold to $25,544. The funds go to the Catholic Relief Services
for distribution. The Board elected Richard J. Clifford, S.J., to the Board of
Trustees and nominated Aelred Cody, O.S.B., for the Committee on Nominations;
it also named Deirdre Dempsey to the Scholarship Committee and Frank Matera to
the Committee on Travel Grants. Jensen
announced that the meeting in 2006 (August 5-8) will be at Loyola University,
Chicago; in 2007 (August 4-7) at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara,
California; in 2008 (August 2-5) at Fordham University, Bronx, New York. The board took cognizance of reports that
the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools promotes a sectarian
and fundamentalistic program that it claims to be in wide use; the board
appointed Bishop Richard J. Sklba to form a committee to learn more about it and
suggest a position we might take. The
Bible Literacy Project in schools, founded by the Templeton Foundation, is, of
course, to be encouraged, and useful textbooks that have been reviewed by
Bishop Sklba and Bishop Emil A.Wcela are due to appear soon. Members will be emailed a link to a website
that provides further information. (For a primary locus, see also
http://bibleliteracy.org.) In response
to a question, Jensen repeated information given last year: the NAB Old
Testament revision was completed in May 2002; it is still undergoing a process
of review by censors, which has to be completed before it can be presented to
the bishops for approval.
Linda
Day gave the report of the editor of the CBQ. Appreciation was expressed to the outgoing
editor, Richard Dillon, for his fine work and dedicated service to the CBQ.
The decision to engage the HK Scriptorium for all pre-press work has
been quite successful and the CBQ is
being very well served. Receipt and
acceptance of publishable manuscript submissions has, for the most part, been
steady. During the past year,
sixty-seven articles were received, of which twenty-one were accepted,
twenty-eight were rejected, and eighteen remain in process. In 2005 the journal will have published 208
book reviews. Members are encouraged to
submit recommendations for able book reviewers, especially persons having
facility in Italian, Spanish, or German.
In the absence
of Christopher T. Begg, Joseph Jensen, O.S.B., gave the report of the editor of
OTA.
Both the February and July 2005 issues have appeared. They contain a total of 818 journal
abstracts plus 74 book abstracts. The
October issue has gone to the typesetter.
Four journals with which OTA
had an exchange ceased publication in the last year
Mark
S. Smith gave the report of the editor of CBQMS. Volumes 38 and 39 have appeared, and volume 40 is in preparation;
he had words of praise for their scholarship, attractiveness, and economy. Smith urged the members to submit
manuscripts for consideration.
The
